Did God Create the World in Six Literal Days?
Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The Bibles then goes on to explain all of the wonderful things that God brought forth with His Word. Genesis 2:1-2 then reads “thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”
A simple reading of the text would lead an honest reader to say with plenty of confidence that God did indeed create our universe in six literal days, which would make the earth only a few thousand years old. Why then is there so much disagreement on this topic? Why does the secular world and even some Christians hold to a view that the earth is millions of years old? Does it really matter if we hold to an Old Earth view?
The age of the earth is of the utmost importance. The Bible tells us correctly that God created a perfect world and then Man sinned and ushered in death. Because of this, Jesus Christ had to come and die for the sins of man so we could be redeemed and live eternally with God. the Bible calls this the “Gospel“. If a person decides to accept the unscientific view that the earth is millions of years old, then they are actually stating that death came before man, and removing the need for man to be redeemed, which in turn means we do not need Jesus to save us. Believing in an old earth (no matter what form of old earth belief) always puts death before man, and totally eliminates our need for Jesus.
There is no reason to not take the Creation account in the book of Genesis as literal. The secular scientific community has taken an unproven unscientific belief and promoted it for years in our schools as actual science. The truth is, real science does not agree with an old earth. Real science is on the side of the believer and never contradicts the Bible.
